A Semiotic-Semantic Analysis of the Character "Masoumeh" in Parinoush Saniee's Novel Sahm-e Man (My Share)

Abstract

One of the most comprehensive theories for analyzing character in narrative is the semiotic-semantic approach, according to which a fictional character can be examined across various domains such as essence, action, and significance within systems of values. The aim of this study is to analyze the character of Masoumeh, the protagonist of Parinoush Saniee's novel Sahm-e Man (My Share), based on Philippe Hamon's model. Research data were collected through library study and textual analysis, and the character was examined in terms of name, physical portrayal, clothing, biography, and psychological dimensions, as well as thematic roles and actantial functions. The findings indicate that Masoumeh's name, as a linguistic sign, represents the conflict between individual identity and social expectations, her physical portrayal and clothing, while evoking innocence and sanctity, also reveal her quest for independence. The psychological analysis of Masoumeh in this novel shows that the character evolves from a phase of passivity and naivety to a level of self-awareness and inner complexity; however, the fulfillment of her desires consistently remains constrained by societal norms and patriarchal structures. The examination of thematic roles and actantial functions demonstrates that she assumes a diversity of roles, which reflects the complexity of her character and her status as the protagonist of the story. Overall, it can be said that Saniee, in Sahm-e Man, portrays the figure of a woman in transition—yet ultimately unsuccessful in achieving full independence—thereby offering a critique of the persistence of social restrictions imposed on women.
